European Style Celebration

My parents are celebrating 45 years of marriage in real style…European style! They will be visiting J’s parents for two weeks in total – one week in Holland and one week in France. J and I are happy that our schedules allowed us to join them during their time in Holland.

They arrived in Amsterdam Tuesday morning. J & I picked them up at the airport, and we immediately went into the old part of the city. Staying awake during the first day is key to successfully overcoming jet lag, so our goal was to provide them with a relaxed day that contained enough activity and interesting sights to keep them alert! A canal tour by boat served that purpose perfectly. We enjoyed lunch while peacefully meandering our way through the maze of canals and under picturesque bridges.

A canal boat ride provides a lot of interesting sights, but does not allow for much physical activity. The drooping eyes of my parents reminded us that physical activity was also needed to combat jet lag. So after leaving the heart of Amsterdam, we then visited Zaanse Schans, an area with preserved old windmills. It also happens to be the spot where J gave me my diamond ring…adding a romantic aspect to the region as well! The weather is unseasonably warm and pleasantly sunny. It was perfect way to spend an afternoon, strolling along the canals and admiring the beautiful old mills.

Our day ended with our arrival at the home of J’s parents in Dronten. Still enjoying the perfect weather, we enjoyed fresh drinks on the outside terrace before having a delicious dinner.
