Christmas Day

We enjoyed a leisurely morning together and opened our gifts after eating breakfast. My family always opened gifts on Christmas morning, and for me it just does not feel like Christmas without it!

Helping Papa open his gift. There are lots of extra hands to open every package! An extra charger for his phone. I received a new down pillow (!) and the girls received a joint gift of the game Candy Land.

I like this action shot!

After opening the gifts, we went to the post office in hopes that my parents’ Christmas package had arrived. It had still been MIA on Christmas Eve. There are a few advantages to live in a country that does not celebrate Christmas! Mail is delivered and the package had arrived!! The girls found the outing to be great fun. The post office is at the university so I showed Elizabeth my work office. And they both found it to be very exciting to walk down the long hallways and to open and close the automatic doors. Oh, the simple delights of childhood!

It was great that we could open the gifts with my parents participating via Skype on Christmas night. It is not the same as being together, but Skype does provide a good alternative!

Inside were gifts for us all. Personally, the Martin’s pretzels were my favorite! The new books are proving to be the preferred gifts of the girls. But the new, cozy blanket for Elizabeth is now required bedding at night!

Thank you to all!!

Sinterklaas avond met vrienden

NoteSinterklaas kapoentje
Gooi wat in mijn schoentje,
Gooi wat in mijn laarsje,
Dank je SinterklaasjeNote

This song has been on constant repeat in our home since the beginning of December. With Elizabeth getting older, the holiday traditions are becoming more and more fun. This year we got out J’s Sinterklaas cd to listen to in the car. It became an immediate favorite of Elizabeth’s. In fact, it is still requested by her for almost every trip in the car (I will soon take the parental authority granted me to put it away until next year!), and she has learned practically all the lyrics of the songs! I, however, am not as quick a learner of the song lyrics! It is fun to have so much enthusiasm in our home for this season.

For the non-Dutch, you should definitely read more about Saint Nicholas, who the Sinterklaas traditions are based on. I like the Dutch tradition of separating the gift giving from Christmas Day itself (although I still hold on to the traditions of my childhood and can’t fully let go of the idea of presents on Christmas morning!). But it is a challenge for me to remember to keep the reason for the season to be foremost in our thoughts.

We celebrated Sinterklaas with just our family on 5 December and opened the gifts so kindly delivered by Sinterklaas :) Sarah was a fully active participant this year. Although not her first Christmas season, it was surely the first one in which she really participated.

The gifts were thoughtfully labeled with the initials of our names to allow Elizabeth the ability to pass them out to the appropriate recipient. Here she is giving the gift labeled “P” to her Papa.

IMG_0142

As I said, Sarah was actively involved and found it difficult to follow the family rule that we open our gifts one by one!

100% concentration on the task. Elizabeth received some new accessories for her wooden doll house.

Finally, Sarah was able to open her gift! A personalized photo book of family members. I really like this little book that I made and hope it will stand up to the wear and tear of child play to be one she can keep for sentimental reasons.

Our Sinterklaas celebrations continued the next evening when our friends, Familie A. came to visit. They are another Dutch/American couple living in Jerusalem. Before opening gifts, we went to the tree lighting in Nativity Square.

Until next year, Sinterklaas!

Dag Sinterklaasje

Merry Christmas from Bethlehem!

This year Elizabeth and I with friends, went up the hill to attend the tree lighting ceremony in Nativity Square. We arrived just as they were counting down! The fireworks were just above our heads and proved to be a little too loud for Elizabeth’s liking. But otherwise, it was a fun albeit crowded time!

IMG_0172

Two weeks later was the tree lighting ceremony in our village. It is an equally impressively tall tree just down the hill from the one in Manger Square. When we moved here 3 years ago, the tree was a real tree down the street from our home that was decorated. Last year the village purchased a tree even taller than the one in Manger Square (something to be proud of). And this year the ceremony was further improved upon with a larger fireworks display but worsened by the introduction of a much too loud speaker system. Seriously, I think 5 years were removed from the lives of our ear drums!

And of course we have Christmas in our home! I don’t have a picture of our tree, but here are some photos of decorations we have in the home.

Elizabeth really enjoyed playing with our window tree.

Christmas lights in the bedroom! They are always so magical :)

IMG_0069

The Little People Nativity has provided a lot of fun for both of the girls. If you ask Sarah “where is Jesus?”, she immediately goes to this and retrieves him for you. However, the sheep seems to be her preferred nativity figure.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Elizabeth!

IMG_0355

We celebrated Elizabeth’s birthday with just our little family and a few skype calls with our family far away. It was a fun evening opening presents, eating cake and talking with family. Elizabeth clearly felt very special and was super excited!

Skyping with Tante Emmanuelle. She received her very own chalkboard and chalk!

The large school bus puzzle has been popular! IMG_0322

IMG_0328We gave Elizabeth “The Picnic Game”. She is now old enough to start enjoying playing games. It’s a fun, new stage, which will become even more fun when Sarah is old enough to participate too!

IMG_0333

Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood DVDs from our friend Chrissy, as well as this recorder. Look at her form!!

IMG_0337

I didn’t get pictures of everything. She also received a season pass to the Jerusalem zoo from Oma and Opa; a box of stickers and other goodies perfect for a 3 year old girl from Tante Janneke, Oom David, Noi and Liselot; and two fun busy bag games from Aunt Teresa (a felt doll with clothes and a clothesline to hang the clothes on, and a make your own cupcake game).

Highlights of Elizabeth at age 3

IMG_0347 (683x1024)

Our sweet Elizabeth is now three! Three?! THREE?!?!

I find myself really loving this age. But honestly, I have found myself loving all stages of development of this sweet child. So perhaps this proclamation is not very earth shattering?! :) She is growing into a lovely little girl. I love those glimpses of her grown-up self that appear with ever increasing regularity. It emerges in a variety of ways.

She has become my little helper. I find myself asking her to do little things around the house more often. I smile every time I see her walk away to do said task with an air of importance radiating from her. She clearly enjoys the feelings that come with helping me. Recently, when I gave her a choice of reading a book, playing a game or helping me clean the bathroom sink – she chose the cleaning! (I will roll with that!). She loves to help, and I want to encourage her. I want to help ignite that proud sparkle in her eyes throughout her life; a sparkle that comes from being made to feel valued, appreciated and important. Helping me clean the bathroom sink may not always be what brings out that sparkle in her eye, but I hope I will always know what I can do to help her feel loved and cherished.

Her grown-up self also emerges in the form of empathy for others – towards her sister, towards her parents, even towards strangers she encounters. When Sarah cries, Elizabeth often caresses her and asks her what is wrong. Or she will go and find a favorite toy to give to Sarah to try to help her be happy again. When she notices that I am feeling sad or frustrated, she can look at me with such concern in her eyes. “Why are you sad, mama?”

I also notice a more grown-up Elizabeth in how she plays. She has become more independent in her play and can keep herself well entertained for long periods of time. She remains a lover of books and can sit for quite a long period of time looking at books by herself (although she much prefers to be read to). I love to observe her fantasy and imagination take form in her actions. She has a series of imaginary friends who make regular “appearances” in our home. Her best “friend” is named Kaikai. Kaikai lives in our neighbohood but sometimes is away on a trip to America or Holland. Our refrigerator is filled with empty containers which in her mind are filled with cakes, strawberries, salad, etc. Every night when we kiss her goodnight, we are given “date chocolates” (her creation…I have never seen such a food) – there is a paper wrapper and 3 pits in each date chocolate, in case you were curious. But currently, the store is out of stock (they only have date chocolates in the summer). Sarah is usually a happy participant in the fantasy play of her older sister. But I also love that we, her parents (and often her sister), remain her most preferred friends and playmates. I recently had an “ah hah” moment at a playground. I was frustrated that she kept wanting me to go with her to the slides and other playground areas. She is clearly old enough to be more independent with these things! But I then realized – it was not that Elizabeth was scared and needed me to go with her, but rather, she really just genuinely enjoys sharing life experiences with me and it is just that much more fun to do it with “mama”! It was a good thought to have and reminded me to cherish these years when I am considered her best pal.

Several other little sweet things that characterize Elizabeth at the moment.

- When her feet stick out the bottom of her blanket she calls out “my feet are leaking out”.

- “I know a song about (fill in the blank)!” We hear her say this on an almost daily basis. When we ask her to sing it for us, she sometimes makes up a tune, but usually she responds with “I don’t know it yet. I need to learn it”.

- Speaking of singing, Elizabeth loves it! Her usual bed time routine (after we leave the room) is to sing through her repertoire of songs that she knows until she falls asleep.

- She has recently started talked about feeling scared. This new phase has also marked the beginning of nightmares waking her up at night. Most times she cannot identify what she is scared of…she just is! But one night when I went to her because she was crying and scared, she fearfully told me “the cows were coming, mama, the cows were coming!” And after calming down, she looked at me with big eyes and said “THAT was scary, Mama!”.  Later that same night the barnyard pigs were stealing her blanket! She clearly needs to spend more time on a farm to lessen her fear of barnyard animals!

- And to continue with the sleeping theme…Elizabeth has also recently declared “I only sleep on holidays”. We usually hear this in the evenings we put her to bed when she is less tired. We aren’t exactly sure where this idea comes from! During the summer in the month of Ramadan, there was a building that turned on a blue light in the distance outside her bedroom window. She loved this light and we told her it was a special light for a holiday. And she will still occasionally ask – “is it a holiday? Is the blue light on?”. So maybe this conversation translated in her brain that she should sleep on a holiday because it is so rare?! Who knows how the mind of a toddler works. She has recently updated her proclamation on a night she did not want to go to sleep:  “I only sleep on holidays. I don’t sleep on good days.” I suppose I should take this as a compliment that the day had been a good one!!

A Favorite Spot–the Old City

IMG_9719

*Rooftop view of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (the two domes). The tall spire is a nearby mosque.

After our church service on Saturday morning, we spent the afternoon walking around the Old City of Jerusalem. It is always a highlight. And since we don’t go very often, it is something I always enjoy a lot too. A nice reminder of the incredible place we call home.

We always like to walk across the rooftops in the old city. It not only offers an escape from the crowds of tourists, it is also a fun view down on the streets and people below.

Friends!

In October our dear friends from Holland visited us for one week. They have been here several times, so we did not have the need to tour all the must-see stops. This allowed for lots of relaxed times together enjoying the company of each other and exploring some favorite places…and a few new ones too.

An afternoon stroll in our neighborhood. Elizabeth loved her new, red, Dutch rainboots!  Who needs rain to wear new boots?! :)

Our friends arrived late at night, after our girls were already in bed. This is what we woke up to in the morning. Elizabeth and E were instant friends.
